Frequently Asked Questions: Study, Privacy & Platform

Last updated: October 14, 2026 • v2026.1

In this guide, we provide direct, transparent answers to frequent questions from students and instructors about using Mnemone, data privacy, our FSRS memory algorithm, and course management.

Privacy, Data & Security

1. Do you train AI models using my notes or quiz questions?

No, absolutely not. Any text, PDFs, or slides you upload to Mnemone are processed strictly to deliver the specific services you request (such as automated question generation and conceptual summaries for your active study sessions).

We do not use, sell, or license your academic materials to third parties for training or fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs). Your materials remain strictly confidential and tied solely to your private account.

2. Can my professors or university see my quiz answers and scores?

No. Mnemone is an independent study platform. We are not connected to university administrative portals, gradebooks, or faculty dashboards.

Your scores, exam readiness percentages, question attempts, and memory retention curves are visible only to you. The only data visible to other learners is your public username and XP points on the course leaderboard (if you choose to participate in competitive 1v1 challenges).

3. Who owns the questions and courses I create on Mnemone?

You do. You retain 100% of the intellectual property rights and copyright over all questions, flashcards, course notes, and explanations that you author.

You grant Mnemone only a limited, revocable technical license necessary to host, format, and serve your study content to you across your devices. If you delete a question or course, this technical license ends immediately.

4. What happens if I delete my account?

Account deletion is immediate and permanent. You can trigger full deletion at any time from your account settings.

When you confirm deletion:

  • Your email address, username, and encrypted credentials are permanently purged from our production databases.
  • All your spaced-repetition statistics, memory stability history, answer logs, and streaks are destroyed.
  • Any questions you chose to contribute publicly to the community library will be anonymized to protect the continuity of other students' study sets, or you can delete them prior to closing your account.

5. Is Mnemone free? Are there hidden fees?

Mnemone provides core study functionality—including creating custom courses, running unlimited spaced-repetition quizzes, taking part in 1v1 duels, and tracking exam readiness—completely free of charge.

We do not request credit cards upon signup and there are no surprise recurring subscriptions. If we introduce optional advanced institutional features in the future, all terms and pricing will be presented transparently beforehand.

6. Do you sell personal data or display targeted ads?

Never. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data or study history to advertisers, data brokers, or commercial third parties. We do not run invasive cross-site advertising trackers or social media tracking pixels.

7. How do you protect my account from unauthorized access?

We enforce rigorous technical safeguards:

  • End-to-end encrypted connections over HTTPS using TLS 1.3.
  • Robust cryptographic password hashing resistant to brute-force and dictionary attacks.
  • Proactive rate limiting and security fingerprinting to mitigate automated abuse and credential-stuffing attacks.

Artificial Intelligence & Course Materials

8. What happens to the slide decks and PDFs I upload?

Uploaded documents are processed temporarily to extract relevant text and construct accurate multiple-choice exam questions. Files are stored in an encrypted, isolated cloud bucket associated with your account. You can delete the uploaded source file anytime from your course settings while keeping the generated questions intact.

9. Can I import questions from Anki, Quizlet, or Markdown notes?

Yes. Mnemone supports bulk importing formatted questions using structured Markdown or text formats. If you have existing Anki decks or summarized lecture outlines, you can bring them into Mnemone in seconds without rebuilding questions from scratch.

Study Method & Memory Algorithm

10. What spaced repetition algorithm does Mnemone use? How does it differ from Anki (SM-2)?

Mnemone uses the cutting-edge FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm, based on contemporary cognitive neuroscience and human memory modeling.

Unlike the classic SM-2 algorithm (developed in the late 1980s and still used in legacy tools), which relies on rigid multiplier heuristics, FSRS tracks both memory stability (how long the knowledge will survive) and intrinsic difficulty independently. This predicts the optimal review threshold with mathematical accuracy, eliminating up to 30% of redundant reviews while maintaining target retention.

11. How is my "Exam Readiness" score calculated?

Your exam readiness score is not a simple arithmetic average of right versus wrong answers. Our algorithm evaluates three dynamic metrics for every concept: 1. The intrinsic difficulty of the question. 2. Elapsed days since your last review (Ebbinghaus forgetting curve). 3. The historical stability of your memory traces.

If you neglect a topic for several days, your estimated retention decays to alert you that a review session is needed before the memory fades.

12. What happens if I miss a few days of study? Do I lose my progress?

Not at all. Your historical progress and consolidated memory traces remain intact. Questions scheduled for days you were away simply wait in your review backlog. When you return, you can clear them at your own pace without resetting your stats.

13. Can I set an exam date to optimize my review schedule?

Yes. When you assign an exam date to any course, Mnemone calculates your ideal daily review pacing: it automatically schedules new card introductions and revision cycles so you reach peak memory retention right before exam day.

Sharing, Study Groups & Copyright

14. Can I share a course privately with just my study group?

Yes. When creating a course, you can select from three privacy tiers:

  • Private: Visible and accessible only to you.
  • Link-Shared: Accessible exclusively to classmates who have your direct invitation link (ideal for group study).
  • Public: Listed in the community Library to assist fellow students across your university or degree program.

15. What happens if someone uploads copyrighted university slides or materials?

Mnemone strictly respects intellectual property laws. If copyrighted lecture slides or proprietary materials are posted without authorization, rights holders or faculty can submit a takedown notice to [email protected] pursuant to Article 16 of the Digital Services Act (Regulation EU 2022/2065). The contested material will be reviewed expeditiously and removed without undue delay, accompanied by a formal Statement of Reasons delivered to the authoring user.

University Verification & Mnemone Studio

16. Do I need an institutional university email (@studenti...) to sign up?

No, you can sign up with any personal email address (e.g., Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, or Proton).

However, if you register using your official university email (such as @studenti.unipi.it, @polimi.it, @unibo.it, or any accredited .edu / .ac.uk domain), our system automatically identifies your campus and awards a verified academic badge to your profile.

17. What advantages come with an accredited academic email?

Registering with an official university email unlocks key community benefits:

  • A verified Academic Badge next to your username and on courses you publish.
  • Priority recommendations for courses and study circles created by classmates at your specific faculty.
  • Seamless connection with university peers taking the same exams.

18. How does Mnemone Studio work for professors, tutors, and course leads?

Mnemone Studio is our dedicated environment designed for academic faculty, teaching assistants, and class representatives:

  • Create official course modules featuring verified questions and in-depth explanations.
  • Generate secure Preview Links to share directly on lecture slides or syllabus pages.
  • Access aggregated, privacy-preserving analytics showing which topics students struggle with most, enabling targeted review during lectures.

Mobile App, Scientific Formulas & Game Modes

19. Is there a mobile app? Can I study on my phone or tablet?

Yes, as a Progressive Web App (PWA). You can install Mnemone directly to your iOS or Android home screen from your mobile browser without visiting an app store.

Open Mnemone in Safari or Chrome and tap "Add to Home Screen". It runs in full-screen mode with instantaneous loading and fluid offline-ready caching even on spotty cellular connections.

20. Does my study progress sync across all my devices?

Yes, in real time. All your study reviews, memory stats, and completed questions are saved immediately to our secure cloud. You can start a session on your laptop in the campus library and finish your review queue on your phone on the train without missing a single card.

21. Does Mnemone support LaTeX mathematical formulas and code blocks?

Yes, with native KaTeX rendering and syntax highlighting.

  • You can write and practice complex formulas in math, physics, and chemistry using standard LaTeX notation (both inline with $ ... $ and display block with $$ ... $$).
  • Computer science and engineering questions feature highlighted, legible code snippets formatted for readability.

22. What should I do if I find a typo or an incorrect answer in a question?

Every quiz card features an instantaneous Report / Feedback button.

  • If you notice a typo, ambiguity, or inaccurate explanation, you can suggest a correction with one tap.
  • For your own courses, you can edit questions immediately from the course manager.
  • For public community courses, reports are routed to the author or content team for prompt verification and correction.

23. Can I export all my questions and study data (GDPR Portability)?

Yes. In compliance with GDPR Article 20 (Right to data portability), you can download a full archive of your questions, answer choices, and study history in open formats directly from your profile settings.

24. Do 1v1 Challenge Duels affect my course readiness score?

Multiplayer 1v1 duels are designed to test your knowledge in real time under chess-clock pressure, allowing you to earn ELO rating points and climb the competitive leaderboard.

To protect your pedagogical plan, fast-paced duels do not penalize the core memory stability scores of your FSRS algorithm in your standard individual study sessions.
